Ok so I managed to download Illustrator at an internet cafe. Took about 2 hours all told. Program is as I feared, really complex. It doesn't help that Adobe talks to you in its help files as if you already know what you are doing. Or worse they go on endlessly for hours explaining how a button can be pushed in so many different ways, or customized to be pushed by another button. Ive finally found a help tutorial that seems a bit more for the layman. See how we do with that. i think I really need the class up in Auckland. Problem is the next one is 3 days away, which I just cant do and the one after that is April 16th which is getting really close to me leaving. Funny thing is Ive just read a basic outline of what Illustrator really is and its a technical drawing tool that does all the things that years back in school, I use to be so good at doing on a drafting table. Oh well never too old to learn.

Rode over the usual mountain bike course. Legs maybe not fully recovered, but they were fresher than they were last week. Got in bigger gears and ground my way up the hills and at the end didn't feel as exhausted.

I prefer Photoshop, but that's (unless you have a pirated version) is easily several hundred dollars/euros. It's not that complicated, but you have to do things in a particular order and pay attention to all of the open windows and what they say. One little thing can totally screw you. But once you get the gist of it, it's really cool.

Photoshop is part of the same Adobe suite. And yeah they are both about $700 programs here. Illustrator is a vector based to create graphics from scratch, where as photoshop deals more with pictures that you've imported.

I always though of Illlustrator as a less-powerful version of Photoshop.

Its hopefully so I can create tourist maps. You know the free maps that are given away in tourist areas. The maps are paid for by the advertising on them. I have a feeling with your art background you know the program? From what Ive tried to learn from people in the business. You import a base map from say Google Maps then clean it up and add the features you want in Illustrator. From there I'll hand it over to a designer I met in India who can put the ad spots in using In Design, and then off to the printer I found in Delhi.

Ah! Makes sense now. I'm not really familiar with it - I've never used any computer art programs. The project sounds cool though, I never thought of that.

ah I was sure Id be able to hit you up as my online guru! haha. I looked through your websites, of which you seem to have lots! You have a great talent in so many art fields. Love the stuffed animals. And your travel blog with all the pictures really gives a good idea of the places you've been.

Yeah hopefully it will eventually allow me to keep traveling and pay for the trips. Go somewhere, map it, sell the ad spots and move on.
