Cambodians are a happy lot that seemed to have moved on from Pol Pot far more than the tourists that visit. Its hard to get over the gruesomeness and horror of the events that happened here only 25 years ago when Pol Pot inflicted a genocide that tortured and murdered any intellectual on an unreal scale. Wearing glasses was enough to have branded you intellectual and have you and your entire family picked up and shipped to the torture camp S21 and then on extracting a admittance of guilt which was often given just to end the pain, transported out to the country and clubbed to death. Babies were beaten against a tree and the remnants of bones can still be seen coming out of the ground. The entire family was murdered through fear that a family member may grow up and attempt revenge.

S21

Its hard to believe Pol Pot could have done what he did. The S21 camp is housed in a school in Phnom Penh. All schools and religious building were destroyed during his rein.

The Killing fields was the area about 30km out of Phnom Penh were familys were brought and killed. They were all brutaly killed by being beaten to death or their throats cut to save on using expensive bullets, many were just buried alive. The grave pits are so shallow and so many were pilled in that the bones and clothing comes up to the surface every time it rains. Its a surreal setting as now it looks quite beautiful and tranquil. Its hard to imagine the horrors this place had seen.

This kid was here with his family, the dad looked like he was probably of the age when he was a kid during the events, possibly his Dad or family members had died here.

Moving on from Phnom Pehn I went north to Siam Riep, the second largest city in Cambodia that exists as a tourist town for the ancient site of Angkor Wat.

My posse of girls that I toured the temples with.

The kids here are insanely lovely and cheeky

The girl I was traveling with invited a street kid to join us at dinner on a street vendors place. he was a total riot, but with really good english. Interesting to listen to his little life.

We had a pretty good tuk tuk driver for the temples, although had the usual negotiations everyday and he was taking bribes from the food sellers to bring us to them for lunch, but they are all at those games.
